What To Do When Your Child Needs Urgent Medical Care

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Five Star Urgent Care for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

If you’ve been at this parenting thing for a while now like I have, chances are your kid has gotten hurt, sick, or suddenly developed mystery rash. Most likely, you’ve experienced all of these. And why is it that they never seem to happen when the pediatrician’s office is open?

The next time you find yourself in this position, and your child’s medical issue is non-life threatening, don’t make the rookie mistake of an unnecessary ER visit. Here’s what to do when your child needs urgent medical care.

Early on in my parenting days, our baby woke up with a fever and scary-sounding cough. In a panic, we drove to the closest ER. Only to wait (and wait and wait some more).
It turned out our little guy had bronchitis, so we got some antibiotics and went on our way.
At this point, all three of were suffering having lost half a night’s sleep and I thought: there has to be an easier way.
Since then, when one of our kiddos has a non-life threatening illness or injury when the doctor’s office is closed, we’ve used urgent care centers.

What’s an urgent care center?

Urgent care centers are walk-in clinics that provide quick and convenient medical care. You simply walk into the facility without an appointment and the on-site providers take care of the rest.

One example is Five Star Urgent Care, with locations all around the state of New York and growing. (Check here for the location nearest you). Five Star Urgent Care is open 7 days a week, because (as we know) kids don’t just get sick during business hours.

What conditions can walk-in clinics treat?

After the bronchitis incident 8 years ago, my family has personally used urgent care walk-in clinics many times to treat things like bladder infections, ear infections, and the mystery fever that ended up being roseola in my youngest.

(Remember that fun time when roseola almost ruined our family’s vacation?)

Five Star Urgent Care treats non life threatening injuries like allergies and sprains, x-rays and immunizations. Check out this page for the full list of services they provide!

But what about medical bills?

The cost of this kind of care is nothing to panic about. They accept most insurance plans (or self-paying patients) and no facility fees are charged.

In my experience, the cost of urgent care facility visits have been comparable to a doctor’s office visit and far less than an emergency room visit.

When summertime fun leads to unexpected injuries…
