Mom Talk Monday: What’s Your New Year’s Resolution?

If you are on any type of social media this week, all you’ll read about is New Year’s resolutions. Love them or hate them, you definitely can’t escape them.

I’m the type of person who becomes obsessed with things at random. I’ll have an idea pop into my mind and I’ll throw myself into it for a period of days, weeks, months or more. When this happens it doesn’t have anything to do with what time of year it is. So when New Year’s rolls around, I’ve already made the change I wanted to make.

If I try to force myself to make a change when it’s the time that I happen to be obsessing over it, I already know it won’t work.

Last year my resolution was to drink more water. I made myself sick for 3 days trying to choke down 64 oz and then promptly forgot about it.

Several times I’ve tried to quit coffee, taking weeks to wean myself from 2 cups a day down to nothing. Then a kid will keep me up all night for whatever reason, and I’ll decide to “make an exception” and drink a coffee that day. That one cup will be the most delicious cup I’ve ever tasted and I’ll wonder why I ever gave it up. BOOM: coffee quitting resolution down the drain.

Another year I resolved to be more organized, and then my husband asked me to organize a drawer. I started twitched from the idea of having to organize and declared myself allergic to organization. Then I resolved to be content with my disorganized life.

This my first New Year’s with a blog so I feel like I need to make a resolution around that. Should I bother? Are my resolutions cursed? Do they ever work for anyone?

What’s your New Year’s resolution? If you don’t have one, why not?

  1. I have had trouble keeping resolutions, so I barely make them haha This year I sort of made a resolution to pay more attention to my blog!

  2. Several times I’ve tried to quit coffee too. I hope this year to quit the bad habits and make my goals come true. Hope you the best for the 2018

  3. I don’t really call what I set resolutions they are more things that I want to continue to build on and see improvement through out the year. It’s actually why I prefer choosing words or vague goals because then you always succeed because you are always growing. That’s crazy about the coffee though, it’s a hard habit to break. My husband recently did it and he definitely misses it.

    1. That sounds like a more realistic approach, as you would keep working and improving throughout the year regardless. Better not to set yourself up for disappointment like some of the resolutions I tried to make.

  4. I don’t make any resolutions for this year because it seems, I always started well and fell down pitifully. This year, I intend to live purposefully, give my best to whatever I put myself too and enjoy life.

    1. Almost like the difference between a crash diet and lifestyle change? Sounds like a great approach. Here’s to your success!

  5. I decided to set a purpose and choose three words to live by instead of resolutions. I don’t like the disappointment of not keeping my resolutions.

    1. Very cool idea with the three words to live by. You’ve got me thinking now about what words would be good to choose.

  6. 2017 was a year in which I struggled to have balance. 2018 is all about treating my body better and focusing more on my family.I want to eat healthier, exercise more and spend more time with my husband and kids.

  7. I personally don’t like the idea of a resolution. I like to set goals and stick to those. As you mentioned, sometimes they are at the beginning of a year, sometimes they come up randomly. As long as I feel like I am accomplishing what I want and constantly moving forward, then that’s good enough for me.

  8. I personally don’t have a resolution. I create goals at any point in the year and vow to stick to them from then. I used to have it in my head that if I broke it, I could start again in January which was such a silly idea. Like you said, they sometimes come up randomly but sometimes they so happen to fall in January. Great post!

  9. I have trouble keeping to New Years resolutions so I call them goals. My goals for this year are to love myself more, just go with the flow, exercise more and etc. I have a lot but I want to be a better version of myself in 2018 than I have in the past.

    1. I like that your way of keeping them as goals. And especially that one of them is to love yourself more, what a great foundation for everything else you’re striving for.

  10. We have some pretty lofty but attainable business goals for 2018! I am really so excited about them. Pushing ourselves hard. ANNNND family goals! We are starting back to infertility treatments so we are really hoping to add a new family member this year!

  11. Ha! Your experiences with resolutions sound a lot like my experiences! I get gung-ho about a resolution, go at it for a few days and then either forget about it or totally give up.

  12. I’ve had mixed results with New Years resolutions. Generally if I want to change something I do it right then. This year instead of a specific resolution I made a simple goal: to have a better year than last year financially speaking. Yes I also want to lose weight, but if I make the resolution I know I won’t do it. And. I will never ever quit coffee LOL. I tried before, it was overrated.
