Back To School Tips That Will Save Your Sanity

Back to school. Whether you’re one of the moms that dreads it or one that is counting down the days, it’s COMING. So since it’s happening, why don’t we try to make it as smooth a transition as possible? Here are 6 back to school tips that will save your sanity!

This post is sponsored by Kleenex, Scott, Cottonelle and Viva but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

Get organized

Ok so in the interest of transparency- I’m completely awful at this. Every year I plan to get organized and it lasts about three days until it falls apart! But this year I’m turning over a new leaf, so I took some inspiration from the best organization Mommy bloggers out there.

back to school tips

This Weekly Snack Prep how-to from Kristine’s Kitchen is perfect for getting everything for the kids’ school snacks and lunches organized. Once you’re prepped for the week, they can grab and go each morning all on their own.

back to school tips

Mama Latina writes about how to create a back to school command center. No more chasing down the papers kids need signed! The kids put them in their designated spot for Mom to sign while they grab the supplies they need to get started on homework. I absolutely love this idea!

Online shopping for school supplies

Seriously, how did I not think of this one years ago? I’ve been hauling all four kids down to the old brick-and-morter with all the lists from all the teachers! Then we leave with 10 times more than we need because the kids are grabbing stuff off the shelves and throwing it in the cart.

Then there’s the inevitable tantrum when I have to say no to a new character lunchbox because we already have way too many lunch boxes.

Just no.

This year I got wise and turned to my trusty pal Amazon Prime for back to school shopping!

I stocked up on essentials like Kleenex Facial Tissues (literally ALWAYS on our school’s wish list, year round) and my favorite Scott Paper Towels (super convenient how you can pick your size with Choose-A-Sheet).

Love how I didn’t have to carry those boxes home from the store.

I also saved on my order! Right now you can save up to $3 on Kleenex, Scott, Cottonelle and Viva back to school essentials at Amazon- and save even more when you subscribe and save.

(Don’t have Prime yet? No worries. You can always sign up for the 30-Day Free Trial)

Fix the sleep schedule

I’m the biggest believer in early bedtimes. Major stickler. Still somehow, the kids’ schedule inevitably starts to slide back as summer goes on.

Maybe it’s the extended daylight, or maybe it’s the never ending summer parties I can’t say no to. Regardless, come August I realize we have strayed from our ideal school year bed time and we have some changes to make.

When you’re trying to get the kids to bed early, don’t attempt to just put them down an hour earlier the night before school starts.

Sorry, it’s not that easy!

They’ll likely stay up an extra two hours just to get back at you for that move.

Instead, start a week or two ahead of time. Try to get them in bed 10 minutes earlier. A couple days later, slide ten minutes earlier than that.

Hopefully the gradual change will be more successful.

Oh, and of course make sure you are waking them up earlier too to ensure that the new schedule sticks!

Tiring them out during the day with lots of outdoor time and swimming never hurt either.

Make a visual schedule for morning routine

When a new school year starts, so does the morning madness. Especially if your kids are less than thrilled about going back to school, they will not exactly be flying through their morning routine when they wake up.

But you also don’t want to start the day with “go get dressed. I said get dressed. DID YOU NOT HEAR ME WHEN I SAID GET DRESSED!”

That’s not pleasant for anyone.

Empower kids to take charge of their own morning routine with a visual schedule. A picture schedule allows even preschoolers to follow their own morning routine on their own.

My kids love dry erase boards, so taping the pictures to a little dry erase board that they can use the markers to make a check mark next to is a big draw.

Or offer a small reward when they’ve completed their whole routine without assistance. One candy corn per day saved our mornings last fall!

Here is a free printable morning routine chart I love for kids who are not yet reading that would totally work for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

Prepare the kids

If your kids are returning to the same school as last year, they are probably comfortable beginning a new grade. But if you’ve switched schools or you have an incoming kindergartener, you will want to prepare them as much as possible.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Read books together about starting school
  • If you have a class list, arrange a couple playdates before the first day of school so your child will have some familiar faces
  • If they offer a practice bus ride, do it
  • Visit the classroom and practice walk throughs of their day (entering the school, walking to the the classroom, going to the cafeteria, coming in from recess, exiting the school)
  • Meet the teacher on the day the school has visiting hours. Be sure to let the teacher know if your child is apprehensive about school and any particular anxieties they have. My oldest used to be bothered by loud noises so I alerted her kindergarten teacher and she stayed close by her during lunchtime and other activities that could get loud.

Don’t forget to make it fun

Remember, kids will decide how they feel about something new by taking cues from you. If you’re at all sad or nervous about the transition, they will pick up on it.

Be proactive- build excitement for the new school year by talking about all the fun they will have! Tell stories from when you were in school and what your favorite parts were. Make a big deal about packing their backpack or a buying a new pair of sneakers. Get them excited about learning how to read or tell time or whatever they’ll be learning this year.

And when the big day comes, make it fun with a family tradition.

It can be as simple as our picture on the front steps, or maybe yours will include a letter board or a “class of 2035” t-shirt. You can also calm their jitters with a special surprise at breakfast time. Or write a silly note to put in their lunch box and brighten their first day.

Whatever you come up with to make the day special and fun will make the positive association you want them to have with school.

What are you doing to make this school year special?

I’d love to hear YOUR favorite back to school tips!

And don’t forget to shop smart and save on back to school essentials with Amazon!

Read on for the best Prime Day deals for Moms! PLUS, how to get in on the action even if you don’t want to pay for a Prime membership!

Amazon Prime Day 2018

Deals to watch for:

There will be deals on all Amazon devices so if you’ve been eyeing something, this will be your time to buy!

Fire tablets

The kids edition of this tablet has everything you need for kids:

-8 hour battery life (take it on those long car rides!)

-16 GB of storage

-1 year of FreeTime Unlimited means you don’t have to pay extra for apps! You have access to 15,000 popular apps and games, videos, books, and educational content from PBS Kids, Nickelodeon, Disney, and more

Best of all, a 2 year worry-free guarantee! If your kids break it, just return it and they will replace it for free. NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

Amazon Echo

I got this for my husband at Christmastime and I swear it’s the only gift I’ve ever gotten him that he actually uses and likes!

“Alexa, what’s the weather today?”

“Alexa, how is the traffic in Baltimore?”

Or, “Alexa, play Jimmy Buffet.”

He says Alexa is the only girl in his life who always listens and never talks back 😆

We keep ours in the kitchen to play music while we cook. That is also a handy place for her because you can add any ingredients you run out of your shopping list, or just order more off Amazon right from Alexa!

Once you have the Echo, grab an Echo dot to have Alexa in any room in the house.

Fire TV / Fire TV Stick

Get the latest streaming device to access Netflix, Amazon video, Hulu, and more. Launch content with the Alexa voice remote!

This looks so cool, I think it will be our next Amazon purchase. It’s a best-seller so I’m expecting a hot deal for Prime Day.

Other deals from last year’s Prime Day included TVs, electronics, toys, home goods, school supplies, and computers. Be sure to check the deals throughout the day if you’re in the market for any of these.

My best guess at this year’s hot products

While there’s no way to predict what the best deals will be this year, I have some predictions to be on the lookout for.

Nintendo Switch was a hugely popular item last year:

The Instant Pot Pressure Cooker has been one of Amazon’s bestsellers for over a year now:

Echo Show is their latest hot item so I’d be shocked if it weren’t included in Prime Day:

Tips and tricks: Make a Wish List

I’m a big believer in not buying things just because they’re on sale. One trick I use to keep me on track with Amazon is to make a wish list ahead of time of items I’m already planning to buy. Then once Prime Day starts, I can check my wish list to see if the price has dropped.

HOT TIP: How to get in on Prime Day 2018 without paying for Prime

Ok so we know the deals are going to be awesome, but they are exclusively for Amazon Prime members. So how can you get in on the action without coughing up the annual fee to become a member?

All you need to do is take advantage of the FREE TRIAL! It’s the easiest workaround ever.

Sign up for a Amazon Prime Membership 30 day Free Trial and just use it for Prime Day! Or, use it all 30 days and set a reminder on your phone to cancel it once the 30 days are up.

Why we love being Prime members

Don’t be surprised if you don’t want to cancel after 30 days. Amazon Prime is so convenient, especially for Moms who don’t want to drag all the kids to the store every time you need to pick up a birthday present for your kid’s friend or a mildew-proof shower curtain.

I’m so used to 2-day shipping now I get annoyed when I shop online elsewhere and have to wait a week for it to arrive!

We also do subscribe and save for diapers and wipes so I don’t ever run into that panic of realizing you’re all out!

Other awesome Amazon deals for Moms:

Amazon Family diaper deal:

Prime Pantry $10 coupon deal:

Get a free gift with Amazon baby registry:

Hire a pro from Amazon Home Services:

Kindle Unlimited for only 99 cents (normally $29.97!)

Hope you all score some hot deals on July 16-17 for Amazon Prime Day 2018!

What To Do If Your Child Is Sleepwalking

Finding your child sleepwalking can be a scary event. You may feel like you’ll never be able to sleep soundly again for fear that your child will roam the house and get hurt.

Then there is the fear surrounding the unknowns of sleepwalking. For example, is it true that you shouldn’t wake a sleepwalker because it might lead to them having a heart attack, or it might cause brain damage?

While this is a myth, there is some truth to the notion that it’s best not to wake a sleepwalker. The best thing to do if you find your child sleepwalking is to gently guide them back to bed. If you try to wake them, they could become pretty distressed and even lash out at you in panic.

There is a risk of injury involved with sleepwalking, so how can you keep your child safe?

child sleepwalking

This post was written in collaboration with Sleep Advisor. All opinions are my own.

How to keep your sleepwalking child safe

Create a safe sleeping environment

Steer clear of low-hanging lights and make sure the space around the bed is clear so the sleepwalker doesn’t trip. Put any sharp or dangerous objects that your child could knock over or walk into.

(Keep in mind that sleepwalkers are usually dreaming and may act out what they’re dreaming. Make sure if the child tries to pick up a hairbrush from the bedside table, he won’t accidentally pick up a scissors instead!)

Also, be sure to lock all doors and windows before going to bed – you certainly don’t want the sleepwalker to be able to get outdoors.

Heavy drapes over the windows are a good call, too… this will save any punching fists or kicking feet smashing through the glass. (Ouch!)

Consider sleeping downstairs

Stairs can be dangers for small children even when they’re awake, so if your child sleepwalks, it’s best to take stairs out of the equation.

If you don’t have a secure gate at the top of the stairs, consider sleeping with your child in a downstairs room instead.

And if you have a basement, keep the door to that locked, too. Just closing the door is not enough, because a child that can open doors while awake is still able to open doors while sleepwalking.

Install an alarm

If your child is up and wandering in the house at night, you will want to know it’s happening. An alarm can alert you that your sleepwalker is up and about.

It doesn’t have to be a high-tech, heavy duty number. It can be a simple as a bell and string device, hung by the bedroom door, which rings should anyone try to venture out during the night.

This could get a little annoying during late-night bathroom breaks; but still, if it prevents your sleepwalking companion from traipsing around the house, it could be a good idea!

child sleepwalking

How to prevent your child from sleepwalking

So, these are some of the measures you can take to keep a sleepwalker safe. But is there anything you can do to prevent them from sleepwalking in the first place?

Turns out that yes, yes there are.

Get enough sleep

It might come as a surprise to you, but most children are not getting adequate sleep for optimal health and growth. Depending on age, your child needs between 9 and 14 hours of sleep in a 24 period.

For toddlers up to age 3 or 4, that typically includes night time sleep plus an afternoon nap.

It is extremely important for kids to have regular, consistent bedtimes and nap times so their body can form natural sleep rhythms and not fall into a pattern of fighting sleep due to over tiredness. Bed time should be when the child starts slowing down their activity level, not after they’ve fought fatigue and get an energy burst known as “a second wind”.

If you have an extremely early riser, check out this post to help them sleep until a normal hour.

If your child has a tendency to sleepwalk, try getting them to bed earlier and sleeping more. For tips on how to get a better snooze on, check out what the Sleep–Advisor has to say about it. Stay rested and who knows – those nocturnal wanders might come to an end.

Promote meditation and relaxation

One reason for sleepwalking can be stress or restlessness of the mind. And this happens to us all, including kids.

For sleepwalkers, this restlessness is happening on an entirely subconscious level. By doing specific exercises to calm the mind, they can achieve a deeper, better-quality sleep.

Even toddlers can learn “bubble breathing”, or long, slow breaths as if you’re blowing bubbles or blowing out birthday candles. This deep breathing helps calm the body, even if they think they’re just playing.

Keeping the lights low the stimulation mild for an hour before bed can help kids get into a more relaxed state as well. The typical bedtime routine of bath time and reading books is optimal for this.

Avoid stimulation before bed

This doesn’t have to be all the time – thankfully – just in the hour before bedtime. Watching TV, playing video games, or being on an iPad isn’t going to help your child sleep.

The thing is, just as the mind is meant to be settling down, the blue light that all those screens emit is sending it into overdrive. They will become more alert, more aware, and less inclined to sleep.

Plus, that hard-core action video game they played before bed might make a sleepwalker jump up in the night to save the day, and 2am stunts are never a good idea!

So sleep well… and sleep safely!

Hopefully these tips will help you to keep sleepwalking at bay, or at least to keep the sleepwalker free from harm. May tonight, and all the nights that follow, be as restful and as peaceful as possible.

How To Spot An Experienced Dad

We’ve all spotted the new first-time Dad before. Pale-faced, nervously clutching his newborn infant’s carseat like the slightest stumble or trip might end in disaster. All Dads start out that way.

Add some time and a few more kids, and Dad becomes a pro.

Experienced Dad

DisclaimerThis review was made possible by iConnect Influencer Management, and Pampers was compensated for my participation in this campaign, but all opinions are 100% mine.

Here are 10 ways to spot an experienced Dad:

He carries a newborn like a football, not a crystal vase.

First time Dads hold their newborns like they may break on them at any moment. The experienced Dad is confident in his baby juggling skills and thinks nothing of tucking the newborn in one arm while using his free hand to get a coffee for Mom. Everybody wins!

He can walk around carrying all his children at once.

experienced Dad

No child left behind! When one kid gets a piggy back, all of them have to pile on Dad. Who is he to deny access to one? Even if you’re 70 pounds, he’s an unstoppable Dad so HOP ON.

He knows how to make diaper changes fun.

Standing diaper change, floor diaper change, or car diaper change… the experienced Dad has done it all.

When his squirmy tot turns into an octopus at diaper changing time, he knows how to distract them into submission so he can get the dirty work done.

He’s also learned that using Pampers is a must! Their Extra Absorb Channels mean that baby can sleep for up 12 hours at night and stay protected from wetness. He isn’t fooled into thinking a bigger, bulkier diaper makes a better diaper!

He’s not ashamed to play princess.

experienced Dad

Girl Dads unite! An experienced Dad does whatever it takes to bond with his kids, and if that means becoming a princess, that’s exactly what he’s gonna do.

He knows when to give Mom a break.

The veteran Dad recognizes the look on Mom’s face when she’s hit her breaking point. That’s when he steps in and offers to take the kids for a hike and out for ice cream. It doesn’t need to be Mother’s Day for Mom to get herself a pedicure and an hour of silence to herself.

He can single handedly organize a baseball game when all players have no idea how to play baseball.

experienced Dad

What’s harder than herding cats? Trying to get a group of distracted tikes to play a pickup game of baseball. In a small yard. When none of them have any idea how to play.

Let’s just hope Dad stays at the pitcher’s mound. Otherwise this venture will likely end with a broken window.

He can turn himself into playground equipment.

Who needs the gym when you have a gaggle of kids happy to help you with your ab workout? The pro Dad can turn himself into all kinds of playground equipment. Here is ours as the human see-saw:

Dad’s shoulder makes the perfect napping place when you’re out and about. And his arms don’t get as tired as Moms so the little one can get their full nap time in.

He has a superhuman sense of when his little one’s in danger.

I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen Dad jump up out of nowhere and catch one of our kids that I didn’t even realize was falling. It’s some kind of Dad-sense that puts cat reflexes to shame.

Dads are amazing!

Here’s wishing a Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there, both new and old. Your presence makes a world of difference in the lives of your children.

Screen Free Summer Activities For Kids

Fight back against the summer slide with these brain-boosting (and screen-free!) summer activities for kids.

Summer Activities For Kids

10 Easy Screen-Free Activities for Summer Fun

If you are struggling to unglue the kids from their phones, iPads or even the television, you don’t have to spend a ton of money with entertaining day trips or vacations during the summer. Instead, you can eliminate the screens and keep them occupied on a daily basis with screen-free activities using household items, art supplies and summer sun.

Tap into your own creativity and reminisce about the days before Snapchat or Mine Craft when encouraging the kids to find ways to entertain themselves and collaborating.

In addition to blasting away boredom, playing creatively with your kids will create the memories you want your kids to have of spending time with you.

Help your kids express their creativity, get in a little exercise and bond with one another with these 10 screen-free activities designed for children of all ages and families of all sizes.

Get Crafty and Musical

Summertime is the best time to enjoy an old-fashioned bottle of lemonade or sweet tea, but you can also make some music after a refreshing beverage with the kids. Turn those empty glass bottles into instruments for a fun learning activity with your kids.

Set up a table in your garage or front yard when the sun is shining or set up camp in the kitchen to transform your home into a music studio. Line up the bottles and have each child blow into or over the top of each bottle to determine the sounds they can make.

Next, add in some common household tools to get the band moving and shaking. For example, use a butter knife or spatula to lightly tap on the glass bottles. Experiment with filling the bottles with different amounts of water to change the tones. Ask the kids questions about how the sound changes depending on the amount of liquid in the bottle.

Put a Wet Twist on Tag

Summer Activities For Kids

Tag is a common game for children to play outdoors, but when you add in a refreshing wet element to help them cool off during the summer, the game gets a little more exciting.

To ramp up the regular game of chase, have them put on their swimsuits and turn it into a game of sponge tag. Mark off the tag area in your yard or the local park and then using a bucket of water, soak a large sponge until it is completely wet.

The leader of the game starts off with the sponge and has to toss it at the other kids trying to “tag” them. Once a person is tagged, he or she must dunk the sponge back into the bucket of water and then assume the role of the tagger.

Make Your Own Window Clings

Let the kids help you decorate while expressing themselves artistically. All you need is a few markers, paints and paintbrushes as well as some contact paper.

Begin by cutting the contact paper into shapes and sizes. For example, combine a large circle with small circles to create a face with ears or cut out a giant heart. Then, have the kids decorate the contact paper by coloring with markers or crayons. You can even make abstract art with paints and paint brushes.

Once the artwork is complete, peel off the contact paper’s backing and have your children stick their masterpieces to windows throughout your home.

Create Rock Art

Summer Activities For Kids

Turn ordinary rocks into masterpieces with this screen-free activity. First go on a little nature hunt to find some small rocks lying in your neighborhood or nearby woods. Then gather up the art supplies to express your child’s creativity.

Using paintbrushes, have the kids add some color and personality to their rocks. You can make silly faces on the by adding eyes, noses, hair, and mouths to each rock. Another idea is to use glitter glue to make a fancy looking sparkly rock. Or, choose a theme for each rock decorating session like “foods” or “animals”, and paint each rock like a different type.

When you’re done, surprise a friend or neighbor by placing a decorated rock on doorsteps or just leave them out in nature for anyone to discover.

Have Your Own Field Day

Summer Activities For Kids

What is every kid’s favorite day of the school year? Field day! Why not have your own field day in the back yard?

Round up your kids and a couple friends or neighbors and everyone can suggest their favorite game or race. Think of the classics like the sack race, water balloon toss, egg on a spoon race, three-legged race and freeze tag. Really anything outdoorsy and sporty goes.

If you have a good size rope laying around, organize a game of tug-of-war! Try different combinations of kids on each side to give kids more chances to win. Girls vs. boys is always a fun one for tapping into their competitive nature. End with a popsicle or cold lemonade to polish off the good old-fashioned fun.

Create Makeshift Trains

If your children are impressed by trains, you don’t have to travel to the nearest railroad to show them the excitement of a choo-choo. Instead, collect a few shoe boxes that you have on hand and create a locomotive they can call their own.

All you need is a shoe box for each child, construction paper and art supplies. Begin by measuring out and cutting construction paper to fit each side of the train (aka shoe box). Attach the construction paper with glue, making sure you have circles for the wheels of the train. Then, have each child decorate their locomotive. Incorporate letter writing for preschoolers by having them choose a name and write it on each car of the train.

Once the shoe boxes are decorated, poke holes at the end of the box and use string to tie them all together and have the kids take their collaborative train on a trip through the house or yard.

Test Your Juggling Skills

Summer Activities For Kids

Juggling is difficult to master, but you can make this activity fun versus frustrating by teaching your children how to juggle with different objects, like soft balls, plastic eggs, or even fruit. Gather up a few apples and oranges and have the children practice juggling outside with just two items. You can even use soft plush stuffed animals or (the easiest object for learning to juggle) scarves.

If it’s a hot day, fill up some balloons with water to get wet and wild.

Once the children have mastered juggling two items, challenge them to add in a third item. Use a stopwatch to time the and see if they can break their personal best juggling record.

Make Edible Necklaces

If your house is like mine you have a pantry filled with different varieties of kids cereals. Why not make tasty crafts with the by turning a handful of Cheerios or Fruit Loops into edible jewelry?

Ideal for younger children, this activity helps your children master measuring and finger dexterity. Start by cutting a piece of yarn that will loosely fit around your child’s neck. Then, let the kids start stringing cereal onto the yarn. They can color code the necklace or alternate different types of cereal to practice making patterns. Once they are done putting on the cereal, tie together the ends of the string and place it around your child’s head.

Snacking on the cereal necklace might mean one less time Mom has to prepare a snack for them that day!

Host a Jump Roping Competition

Summer Activities For Kids

Help the kids get in some fun in the sun and some exercise during the summer. With a few jump ropes on hand, you can help your crew master basic jumping and stepping skills while also keeping them away from screens.

Start by showing younger kids how to jump rope. You can ease them into the activity by teaching them how to step over the rope one foot at a time and then advance into jumping with both feet while swinging the rope overhead.

Once all of the children have mastered basic jump roping, switch it up. For example, you see can jump rope continuously for 30 seconds without stopping or trying turning the rope backwards. Play some music and enjoy dance-jumping to the beat.

Become One with the Earth

Summer Activities For Kids

Sometimes, kids just need to get messy to have fun and this outdoor activity gives them the opportunity to do just that.

Have each child put on play clothes or swimming suits and head straight for the dirt armed with shovels, buckets and beach toys. Bring out a plastic pitcher of water and give each child a paper plate or plastic container to make mud pies for the day.

You’ll be shocked at how much your kids will enjoy getting messy and digging into the Earth. A good clean-up activity afterwards is a car wash! That way you can soap and hose down the kids before they walk back into the house.
